Alfred Prufrock’, where the outer world is presented as irrelevant in comparison to the neuroses of its titular character. In ‘Prufrock’, Eliot focusses on the mentality of the individual, paying particular attention to the nuanced processes of thought. Eliot portrays a character who is riddled with anxious and obsessive thoughts that lead to existential crises and self-doubt. Prufrock’s worries are not extraordinary, instead being rather mundane. Concerning his physical, outer self he obsesses over how his body image is perceived by his peers and how they will say â€Å"How his hair is growing thin!†[1] or â€Å"But how his legs and arms are thin!† [Eliot, Line 44] and worries about his sexual inadequacy, concluding that â€Å"I do not think that [the mermaids] will sing to me†, [Eliot, Line 125] the songs of mermaids coming to represent the agelessness of female beauty and sexuality. But these outer world elements do not seem to be the focal concern of Eliot. Instead it is the worries of the inner world, the psyche, which interests him. As James E. Miller Jr not es, the insecurity of Prufrock â€Å"extends to all the frustrations universally felt when contemplating the elusive meaning of life – and death.†[2] He catastrophizes, pondering whether his simplest failure would cause him to â€Å"dare / Disturb the universe† [Eliot, Lines 45 – 46] and mourns the repetitive monotony of his existence, having â€Å"measured out [his] life with coffee spoons†. [Eliot, Line 51] Eliot dissects the human mind and makes the outer world almost totally insignificant in comparison to these existential threats. Miller notes, furthermore, that â€Å"those who cannot identify with Prufrock’s sexual frustrations have no difficulty in sharing all his other frustrations†, thus making the inner world of his character and his utter ordinariness the prevalent concern of the poem. [Miller, pg. 156] Eliot begs the reader to relate with Prufrock and recognize the similarities between themselves and this pitiful character. When Prufrock laments â€Å"I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker, / And I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker, / And in short, I was afraid†, [Eliot, Lines 84 – 86] little effort is needed from the reader to see something of themselves in his failings. Thus Eliot deconstructs the inner world of the mind and places it clearly as superior to the outer world of the physical body, making the relationship between the two one of competition. This dynamic, however, is changed drastically in Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’, published in 1922, only seven years after ‘Prufrock’. In the seven years between these two publishing dates Europe was ravaged by World War One. The structural and economic implications of the conflict manifest in ‘The Waste Land’ where Eliot takes a position towards the outer world that is opposed to that presented in ‘Prufrock’. The symbolic image of decimation evoked by the title can be seen in ‘The Burial of the Dead’, the opening section of the poem, in the second stanza. Here, Eliot presents to the reader a true waste land where â€Å"the sun beats, / And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief, / And the dry stone no sound of water.†[3] Through this wilderness of Biblical proportions, Eliot creates a truly chaotic outer world. This apocalyptic creation is shown to have a direct effect on the inner world of the human mind, shown through Eliot’s depiction of the inhabitants of London, which, as a consequence to the war, has become the â€Å"Unreal City†. [Eli ot, Line 60] The title â€Å"Unreal City† suggests something of a spectral community. Max Saunders writes that in the poem there is an â€Å"inescapable presence of the war dead, whose presence certainly haunts The Waste Land†[4] and the grief over such an undignified death can be seen in the people of London who have become emotionally stunted having lost all sense of solidity and security through the war. Eliot writes â€Å"I had not thought death had undone so many† [Eliot, Line 63] and is thus suggesting that the repercussions of the conflict have had a far greater effect on the psychology of society than he had anticipated. The fact, however, that he thought death would undo even some implies that Eliot has recognized a link between the state of the outer world and the inner world. The wastes of war have, for Eliot, created an outlook on life that is focussed on both the contingency of life and inescapable nature of death. Part IV of ‘The Waste Land’, Ã¢â‚¬Ë œDeath by Water’, can thus be read as a spiritual reaction to the world depicted in ‘The Burial of the Dead’. Here, the character â€Å"Phlebas the Phoenician† [Eliot, Line 312] lies dead on a beach. Eliot states that this character â€Å"Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell / And the profit and loss†, [Eliot, Lines 313 – 314] showing that in death Phlebas has been relinquished of all sensual and societal bonds, showing the reader that in a world ruled by post-war philosophy nothing of our present outer state counts in death. The finality of death is further emphasized by the line â€Å"Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you†, [Eliot, Line 321] reminding the reader that they too shall follow the same fate as Phlebas. Eliot is thus creating a bond between the outer world of ‘The Burial of the Dead’ and the inner world philosophy of ‘Death by Water’, the latter being a direct reaction to the first and thus creating a relationship of reaction between the two. If we are to view ‘The Waste Land’ as a work where the relationship between inner and outer worlds is one of reaction, we may see Ulysses as a work where the relationship is one of dependence. In the novel Joyce presents several narrative voices, the two most prominent being that of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. Though Joyce largely focusses on Bloom, Stephen is a character of equal importance, especially when considering the relationship between inner and outer worlds. For the first three chapters of the novel we follow Stephen through the morning of the 16th June 1904 and here we are given insight into his thought processes. In Chapter 3 we see Stephen detach almost entirely from the physical outer world and into his own personal inner one. Joyce depends heavily on the stream of consciousness style here, following Stephens’s thoughts wherever they may lead. Stephen consistently strays away from the outer world, leaving behind all physical forms and loses hi mself somewhat in philosophical and literary ponderings. â€Å"Stephen closed his eyes to his hear his boots crush crackling wrack and shells. You are walking through it howsoever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space†[5] is an example of how Stephen removes himself from the outer world, the physical act of walking on a beach becomes a rumination on his insignificance in the universe. There is also, however, a metafictional separation from the outer world as the voice of Stephen takes over from the narrator, the sentence passing from third person through to second into first. This change in tense signifies that Stephen’s inner world has taken prominence over the outer world created by the narrator, which, in context to his character (a precocious artist), is symbolic of how for Stephen the inner world takes prominence over the outer. But unlike in ‘Prufrock’, this is not simply a literary tool to be exploited. Rather, Stephen’s preference for the inner world is a consequence of his upbringing. His father’s negligence, his mother’s recent passing and his own failure to succeed as an artist are all factors of his outer world that have caused him to retreat into an inner world of intellectualism in the endeavor to truly find his own identity. His theory on Hamlet for example, aligning Shakespeare with the ghost of protagonistà ¢â‚¬â„¢s father and Shakespeare’s dead son with Hamlet, shows that Stephen lacks direction from an absent father figure and this absence has affected his outlook on life. While Eliot, through the individual in ‘Prufrock’, presents the outer world as irrelevant in comparison to the endless nuances of the inner world, Joyce suggests that the relationship between the two on an individual level is no different than on the collective level. Just as in ‘The Waste Land’, the relationship is one of reaction and dependence. To stand as a contrast to the intellectually centered Stephen, Bloom is recognized as being a character that truly embodies the physical sense of being a biological entity. While Stephen barely acknowledges himself as part of humanity, Bloom is unmistakably a human character. In Chapter 4 we are introduced to Bloom as he goes about his morning routine. He consumes a pig’s kidney, sexually lusts after a woman at the butchers and he concludes the chapter by going to toilet and wiping himself with a strip torn from a newspaper and then checks himself for faecal stains, the narrator describing Bloom having â€Å"eyed carefully his black trousers†. [Joyce, pg. 85] At the end of Chapter 5 Bloom has a masturbatory fantasy, envisioning his genitals in a bath, â€Å"the dark tangled curls of his bush floating, floating hair of the stream around the limp father of thousands, a languid floating flower.† [Joyce, pg. 107] Concerning the latrine scene Marilyn French writes tha t the â€Å"scene, matter-of-factly described even to the extent of Bloom wiping himself †¦ symbolizes Bloom’s mental acceptance of body and bodily functions.†[6] Joyce therefore gives Bloom a place in humanity, unlike Stephen. While Stephen secludes himself to his inner world, Bloom unashamedly celebrates his body and sexuality, the essence of his outer world. This celebration, however, does not mean that his inner self is ignored. Bloom’s thoughts and feelings are given equal importance in the novel as his physicality, but when compared to Stephen, who exists almost solely as a process of thought and not a physical being, the reader cannot help but be particularly drawn to these examples of a bodily outer world. Once again, however, there is, on an individual level, parallels between Joyce’s character and Eliot’s ‘Prufrock’. Both characters famously suffer some form of sexual inadequacy and both feel like the outsider in society. But it still stands that in ‘Prufrock’ Eliot subjugates the outer world for the inner, while in Ulysses Joyce gives the two equal voice and importance. In that way, Ulysses has more in common with ‘The Waste Land’ in that both works provide equal opportunity to the outer world of society and the inner world of the human psyche. Jewel Spear Brooker notes that the second stanza of ‘The Burial of the Dead’ â€Å"is rich with associations, and satisfying, in part, because it provides what Eliot’s title promised: a waste land.†[7] This passage is satisfying not simply because it lives up to its titles promises, but also because it provides some form of solid setting that the reader can recognize, an outer world that is easy to imagine and free from the disorientating literary allusions that puncture the rest of the poem. Similarly, Dublin serves as a cohesive focalizing setting in Ulysses. Throughout the novel Dublin becomes as much a character in its own right as Bloom or Stephen, Joyce providing it with both an inner and outer world. In the novel Joyce pays meticulous detail to street and shop names, mapping his characters journeys. In Chapter Five Bloom starts his journey walking down Lime Street, crosses Townsend Street and then on to Westland Row where â€Å"he halted before the window of the Belfast and Oriental Tea Company†. [Joyce, pg. 86] Such specificity creates a physical sense of the city, blurring the line between fact and fiction. Joyce truly creates an outer world where Dublin dominates as a presence. But, just like Stephen, Bloom and ‘The Waste Land’, there is an inner world to also explore. From the date of Ulysses’ publication 1922 the reader will have been reading the novel in the wake of the Easter Rising of 1916. Hugh Kenner writes that â€Å"Joyce is carefully reproducing the spurious Dublin life of an embalmed past.†[8] Set twelve years before the Rising, the Dublin depicted in Ulysses serves as a record of the city before the fight for Irish independence. The citizens of Dublin act out the part of a colonized people who have had their culture ripped from them. The old milk maid in Chapter One, who fails to recognize Irelands native Gaelic language, ironically spoken by an Englishman, but says she’s been â€Å"told it’s a grand language by them that knows†, [Joyce, pg. 16] comes to serve as both the collective inner world of the colonized Irish but also a mockery of W. B. Yeats Irish heroine Cathleen ni Houlihan and thus symbolizes a lack of national identity. Joyce depicts a Dublin with a fully recognized physical form and a col onized and anti-British collective mind, a character in its own right with interconnected inner and outer worlds. By 1922, the year both Ulysses and ‘The Waste Land’ were published, both Eliot and Joyce depicted worlds and characters that demonstrate that the relationship between inner and outer worlds is one of reaction to the modern world, whether that be conflict or lack of identity. Together, Ulysses, ‘The Waste Land’ and ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ form a group of texts that have become synonymous with modernist writing as a movement, and thus the relationship between inner and outer worlds presented in them come to represent, in part, the relationship in modernism as a whole. Symbiosis is key to the modernists handling of inner and outer worlds, in both Ulysses and ‘The Waste Land’ the outer world defines the inner and the same can be said in reverse. The modernists, as exemplified through Joyce and Eliot, created a literary tradition that rejects the constraints of language and literature and where there is no true definition o f an inner or outer world but rather a whole, the inner and outer blending seamlessly together to create one world of thought. The era of globalization has brought about a storm of change that has overturned almost every aspect of business and trade. It has affected every industry, every sector, every nation and every economy, giving rise to the concept of the world being a global village, where there are no boundaries. With the advent of globalization, there is a need amongst the investors to expand their horizons beyond their local security markets. Indian Depository Receipts, or IDRs, are a result of this phenomenon. It is a rupee-denominated, derivative financial instrument that allows foreign firms to raise capital in India. The need for international diversification of an investors portfolio has driven the formation of this financial instrument. The rising economy of India is making India an irresistible investment playfield for investors throughout the world. Although IDR is not very different from other financial instruments, it has its own set of merits and de-merits. It allows firms to broaden and diversify their investor base, thereby promoting a global image for the firm. Although its American counterpart American Depository Receipt (ADR) has been there since the 1920s, IDR is relatively young, being born in 2004, and even then it was widely unpopular due to the rigid conditions RBI had put on the applicant firms. It was only after the changes made in the ruling in 2007 that the concept of IDRs gained momentum , with Standard Chartered becoming the first firm ever to apply for registration of IDR issues in April 2010. A lot remains to be seen about the future of IDRs and the role they play in the Indian Economy. This paper gives the reader a simplified insight into the inner workings of IDRs, what they are; how they are issued, their pros and cons for both individual investors as well as institutional investors; all of this minus the superfluous and baffling technical jargon. Section 2 deals with defining what IDRs are and why they are needed, while section 3 deals with the history of IDRs. Section 4 deals with a brief overview of the whole process of issuing and registering for issuance of IDRs. Section 5 deals with the advantages and disadvantages of IDRs and section 6 deals with a comparison of IDR with its American counterpart. Section 7 provides an insight into the Standard Chartered story: the first ever firm to register for an IDR issue. Lastly section 8 deals with the fut ure prospects of IDRs, what it can do for investors and the Indian Economy. Section 9 and 10 provide the conclusion and references respectively. 2. Indian Depository Receipts As per the definition given in the Companies (Issue of Indian Depository Receipts) Rules, 2004, an Indian Depository Receipt is defined as: A rupee-denominated instrument in the form of a depository receipt created by a Domestic Depository (custodian of securities registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India) against the underlying equity of issuing company to enable foreign companies to raise funds from the Indian securities Markets. The concept and the need for IDRs can be best understood with an example. Say, Mr A, an Indian investor, wants to invest money in AutoNation, a US company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The traditional method for investing would be to contact a broker of NYSE and deal with him. But it is not as simple as it sounds. Mr. A will have to face a lot of obstacles such as unstable settlements, fluctuating currency conversions, unfamiliar market regulations, unreliable information channels and perplexing tax conventions and interna l investment policies. All of these are more than enough to put even the most experienced investors off their game, which defeats the whole point of them investing in foreign markets in the first place. What IDRs do, is allow people like you and me (assuming both of us are blind as a bat when it comes to finance) to invest in foreign companies and diversify our portfolio, without the aforementioned hassles. When a foreign company, like AutoNation, wants Indian investors (like Mr. A) to raise money, it will use Indian Depository Receipts (IDR). An IDR will represent underlying shares of AutoNation, but will be denominated in Indian currency. Just like the shareholder of a regular equity, Mr. A will own a part of AutoNation, and will be entitled to dividends, rights issues and other such payouts that AutoNation issues. The basic purpose behind IDRs is to achieve Cross listing. A foreign company will have the primary listing on its domestic exchange (like NYSE or LSE) while it s listing on the NSE or BSE will be secondary. An IDR has to be listed on Indian stock exchanges (like BSE and the NSE), and can be traded like regular equity shares. It allows people to invest in foreign companies without trying to scrutinize every intricacy of the trading laws and practices in that country. Also, since it is rupee-denominated, there are no hassles regarding currency conversions and fluctuating rupee values. 3. The IDR Issue Process The idea of IDRs was conceived by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs as early as 1997, via the Company Bill. But the actual amendments happened in the form of section 605A of Companies Act. In 2002, a draft of IDR rules was declared and changes were made after citing expert opinions. This finally became the Companies (Indian Depository Receipts) Rules, 2004. The regulatory body for IDRs is SEBI (Securities Exchange Board of India), which issues the guidelines for applicant companies and specifies the eligibility requirements. The model listing agreement (this is the agreement the foreign company is supposed to get into with the exchange where the IDRs will be listed) for IDRs can be found on the SEBI website for all interested parties. 3.1 Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Issuers The eligibility criteria for the foreign companies who want to issue IDRs were somewhat stiff earlier, which was the main reason behind IDRs being unpopular. But in July 2007, substantial steps were taken towards encouraging investments in IDR. Making the selection criteria more lenient was the first step towards this. The revised eligibility criteria are defined as: a. The foreign company should have PreÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ issue paidÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ up capital and free reserves of at least US$ 50 million and have a minimum average market capitalization (during the last 3 years) in its parent country of at least US$ 100 million b. It should have a continuous trading record on a stock exchange in its parent country for at least three immediately preceding years c. It should have a track record of distributable profits for at least three out of preceding five years d. The underlying shares shall not exceed 25 percent of the post issue number of equity shares of the company. CONCLUSION The internationalization of stock markets due to globalization has driven a large number of countries (both developed and developing) to unbolt their stock markets to foreign investors and to relax their previously stringent laws restricting their citizens from investing abroad. Indian markets are taking a dynamic role in this transmutation through IDRs. Undoubtedly, India has enough depth in its security markets to attract sizeable investor interest for IDRs. But problems like an unfavourable, stringent regulatory environment, difficulty in accessing markets, fungibility issues, instability of policies, etc., provided substantial hindrances to the growth of IDRs in India. Certain positive steps by SEBI like the amendment of the previous regulations and a decision to reserve almost 30 % issues for retail investors has made IDRs catch attention of global giants. It has started with Standard Chartered Bank getting a green light to Rs 50 billion through an IDR issue in 2010. I know for a fact I do just as much work as my friends who go to big time universities. Each one of my professors knows exactly what they are doing. None of my professors take it easy just because we are at a community college. That is not an excuse for anyone to use. Living at home can be a great thing or a bad thing. All depends on how you use the time when you are not in class. By attending a community college for the first two years, it saves so much money. If you also have a job it is even better, because you are saving money in two different ways. Each person has different reasons for going to a community college. I wanted to save money so I have fewer loans to pay off in the future. I like earning my money so I work when I am not at school. Working helps my parents out a lot because I never ask for money. I never thought I would have liked the â€Å"college scene,† but when I went to visit my best friends over spring break, I changed my mind really fast. I also wanted to bring my grade point average up as high as possible so I can get into a really good nursing school. My number one reason for starting off at a community college was because my cousin/Goddaughter was born a couple days after my high school graduation. Who/what is the most to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet has been described as one of the greatest love tragedies in play history. It is filled with strong emotions and views, tension, action, violence, humour and most of all love, that binds the star-crossd lovers together. A wondrous play which captured the Elizabethans attention and for generations to come. In this essay, I hope to explore the play and see what or who is the main cause of this catastrophic love story.Before the first scene begins, the chorus tells us what is to be expected in the play. A pair of star-crossd lovers take their life; whose misadventurd piteous overthrows, Doth with their death bury their parents strife. The star-crossd lovers mean that Romeo and Juliets love is to be hindered, because of the stars, that causes them to have bad luck in their relationship. This is described as misadventurd piteous overthrows where someone or something has been a victim of something that theyre innocent in, we feel pity for them, we can call this a tragedy. This prologue has basically told what the plot is, but as most would do in the Elizabethan period, they wouldnt be attentive at the start, especially if theres just a man standing on the stage rambling on, they need action, which is what the first scene provides.In Act 1, scene 4, Romeo changes his mind and decides going to the Capulets banquet is not a good idea after all. He says, I fear, too early; for my mind misgives, some consequence yet hanging in the stars. Here Romeo has an omen of what to come. He feels that if he goes in there, something bad will happen. Meeting Juliet is a good thing, but also a bad thing, because it leads to their deaths. Shakespeare probably talked a lot about fate and superstitions in his plays, as the Elizabethans were superstitious and therefore in his plays it gave it that extra credit, to make the audience feel more interested. When Romeo leaves the banquet, Juliet says, If he be married. My grave is like to be my wedding bed, meaning if Romeo is married, shell die unmarried, as she wont want to marry no other. Here we see a foreshadowment, because her grave does become her wedding bed.In Act 2 scene 6, Romeo says; Then love-devouring death do what he dare: It is enough I may but call her mine Here Romeo is challenging fate, which he does a few times throughout the play. Is it een so? Then I deny you stars, Fate does play a large part to blame for this tragedy. At the end before Romeo kills himself, he says, O here, will I set up my everlasting rest: and shake the yoke of inauspicious stars, Here he is taking his chances on death. He is to be at peace when he dies, he will be free from the doom of his fate in the stars.Romeo cries; Oh I am fortunes fool, He feels as though his life is just being played around with. When Romeo finds out Mercutio is dead, he says, This days black fate on more days doth depend; this but begins the woe, others must end. Romeo knows he has reached a point of no return. He will fight Tybalt to ga in revenge, but he knows that wont be the end of anything.You could say that the messenger not getting to Romeo on time, therefore the layout of the plan doesnt get to him, could be a stroke of bad luck. It was fate that stopped that from happening. Romeo not knowing what the plan is thinks Juliet is dead and leads him to commit suicide.Juliet also mentions about fate and fortune being involved in her life. She then goes on to say after Romeo is gone, O fortune, Fortune, all men call thee fickle, Here she is talking to fortune, saying that Romeo is renowned for his faithfulness and that faithless fortune should leave him alone. Juliet is hoping that fickle fortune should leave him alone, but she is also hoping that it will bring her Romeo back.The main characters each are responsible for intervening in this tragedy, which might not have been, if they had not each d one what they did. Romeo, his character is very headstrong, where his head rules him. With loves light wings did I oer-perch these walls, Romeo, and in the next line, he is saying that with love he is invincible! When Juliet asks him how he found her, he replies, By love, who first did prompt me to inquire; He lent me counsel a1nd I lent him eyes. Saying it was love who told him to go and find Juliet and in return for that, he gives love his eyes to find her.In the play at the beginning, Romeo appears to be very immature and does not yet know of true love, as one minute he was weeping for Rosaline and the next it was for Juliet in a matter of seconds. Did my heart love till now? For swear it, sight! For I neer saw true beauty till this night, which is a quick change of heart. Before he goes into the Capulets feast, he tells Benvolio, that he cannot compare any other with Rosaline, When the devout religion of mine eye, maintains such falsehood, then turns tears to fires, and that h is eyes would be lying if there was such another beauty as Rosaline. This shows that Romeos love for Rosaline was a petit crushWhen Romeo tells the Friar that he has a new love, the Friar is shocked and doubts Romeo know what love is. Young mens love then lies, not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes. He criticises Romeo for his sudden change in heart. Even though these are all flaws in Romeos character for being too easy to change his mind, Romeo is still a benevolent person. When he kills Paris, Paris asks if he could be laid next his dead wife, even though Romeo loathed Pairs, he still carried out Paris request and respected him. If Romeo didnt want to go to the feast and he had a gut feeling about this, then why did he go in the end? Perhaps he didnt mean what he said and in fact was eager to go the party?Juliet is still yet young and like any other young teenage girl dreams of marriage and falls in love easily. She rushes into marriage very quickly, though it seems quite ironic, as at first she says to Romeo in Act 2 Scene 2, It is too rash, too unadvisd, too sudden, but later on she says, Thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow, Romeo and her only met about two hours ago, they hardly know anything about each other, and shes already proposing marriage! This can also link onto how speed plays a part of her and Romeos death.The play happens in such a short space of time, the events within in it occur quickly, e.g. Capulet decides to have a feast with only one days preparation. He also decides to marry Juliet in the matter of 2 days. Romeo and Juliet marry each other within a day of meeting. Perhaps if things had slowed down and were more thought about, then the consequences of Romeo and Juliets actions may not have been so fatal. As Friar Laurence suggested, Wisely and slow they stumble that run fast after he marries them, giving them a bit of advice.Friar Laurence thinks that Romeo is rushing into things, with regards to marrying Juliet. He d oesnt think that Romeo could understand what love truly is, if he can stop loving one person for another in a matter of moments. In Friar Laurences first soliloquy, he compares the plants to humans. He also says, virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied; And vice sometimes by action dignified. He is saying that too much of a good thing can be dangerous and a bad thing can be used for the good. This is like a foreshadowment of the whole play. Romeo and Juliet fall in love and it causes their death, but their death brings the feud between the Capulets and Montagues to an end. Friar Laurence is reluctant at the start to marry Romeo and Juliet, but then he says, In one respect, Ill thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love.He thinks he should play a bit of match making and marry these two to end the feud. If he did not agree to marry them so quickly, then they would have slowed down, they might not have died. Though he does advises Romeo a lot, he acts like a father figure to him. He tries to talk sense into him, just before he is to be married. There violent delights have violent end He is saying that he shouldnt rush into things. The love wont last. He left Juliet at the tomb at her funeral, maybe if he had not left, she wouldnt have killed herself, he couldve stopped her, Come go good Juliet, I dare no longer stay. He probably left, scared of being found out, feeling ashamed and guilty.For Juliet, the nurse is her mother figure She knows Juliet even better than her own mother, Lady Capulet. She even has nicknames for her, What lamb, what ladybird, which shows how close her relationship with Juliet is. The nurse is part of the family, shes been there for a long time. She advises Juliet on what to do and lies for her, but when Juliets parents announces, that Juliet is to be married, the nurse tells Juliet, I think it best you be married with the County, O hes a lovely gentlemanI think you are happy in this second match, Juliet cannot believe whats shes hearing and asks, Speakest thou from thy heart: and the nurse says she does. As no one agrees with her and sides with her, she pretends to agree and play along with her fathers will. When the nurse leaves, shes says to herself, Ancient damnation, O most wicked fiend, and feels betrayed by the nurse who probably did it because she didnt want to lose her job and be blamed for it.You could say that Mercutio and his rivalry between Tybalt helped Romeo and Juliet come to their deaths. Tybalt is the main stirrer of the feud, if he had controlled his rage, then Romeo wouldnt need to kill him. Its quite ironic how Mercutio criticises Benvolio of being a quarreller when hes the one who picked a fight with Tybalt later on in the play. Thy head is full of quarrels then he later says to Tybalt, heres my fiddlestick, heres that shall make you dance: zounds consort. Mercutios character is very head-strong, you could say that the heat made hi m more easily irritated, For now these hot days, is the mad blood stirring When he is stabbed he says, I am hurt. A plague oboth your houses! I am sped. Is he gone and hath nothing? He feels that he has wasted his life and that dying for neither house is worth it and Tybalt goes away without a scratch. Mercutio casts a curse on both houses, he repeats this phrase, a plague oboth your houses, three times, which was considered in the Elizabethan era to be a dead mans curse. This could be a reason why Romeo and Juliet had no luck through out the rest of the play.The parents have a part to blame you could argue. Theyre the ones, you could say who have pushed them to their death ever since day one. Romeos parents dont really contribute much to his death, except for their part in the family feud. But it is mainly Juliets parents who force her to marry Paris. At the beginning of the play, when Paris asks Capulet for Juliets hand in marriage, Capulet says shes too young, he says that Julie t is his only child, therefore the heiress to all his fortunes. He tells Paris to flirt with her and try his best in attempt to gain her love, but he says, My will to her consent is but a part which means even if he does agree to the marriage, Juliet is the one with the final say.But later on in the play, he has a sudden change of heart. I think she will be ruld, in all respects by me: I doubt it not. And hurries his wife to inform Juliet about it. He is now saying that Juliet will listen to him and do what she is told, which is a whole different attitude as to the beginning. Notice that he says, Acquaint which means tell and not ask. He now considers Juliets love can be given to anyone he likes.Lady Capulet goes to bring the news to Juliet. You can tell by how Juliet addresses her mother as Madam rather than mother, this shows how their relationship isnt that strong. When Capulet comes to see how Juliet has reacted to the news. Lady Capulet says, Ay, sir; but she will none, she gives you thanks. I would the fool were married to her grave! Which is ironic as that is what happened in the end. Capulet puts pressure on Juliet,And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets, So it is making Juliet have no choice, but to marry Paris otherwise shell be thrown out. Lady Capulet then says, Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee. Shes had enough and Juliet has no choice or say in her life. In the end Juliet pretends to agree with the marriage and her parents are delighted. Capulet even moves the wedding to Wednesday instead of Thursday. Yes, her parents are threatening and forcing her into marriage, but you could say that, like most parents, they want whats best for their children. If only they hadnt forced Juliet to marry Paris, then, she wouldnt have to have faked her own death.From the prologue, we know that there is a feud going on, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean as the chorus tells us. The feud between the two households has been going o n for along time. When the Prince comes in at the beginning to stop the street fight, he says, Rebellious subjects enemies to peacethree civil brawls of bred of an airy word, By thee old Capulet and Montague. The Prince is sick and tired of this war, that he commands that there will be no more fights between them, otherwise theyll have to face severe punishments.At the end of the play, when they discover Romeo and Juliet have both died, the Prince says, Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heaven finds means to kill you joys with love So the Friars thinking, of how Romeo and Juliets love could end the feud, was true, it did. Though it had to take the lives of two innocent beings for them to finally shake hands and make peace. Montague says at the end he will make a golden statue for Juliet and Capulet will do the same for Romeo.Overall, I think that all that I have mentioned above has played a fair share in the tragedy, but I think perhaps, that fate a nd fortune and the whole feud itself are probably the main causes for Romeo and Juliets deaths. If the feud had not been going on between the two families, then Romeo and Juliet would not need to have gone through with the things they did, and throughout the play, little went right for them, luck didnt seem to be on their side. The play ends, with the Prince saying, A glooming peace this morning with it brings, the Sun for sorrow will not show his head:Some shall be pardond, and some punished. For never was a story of more woe, Than this of Juliet and her Romeo. This ends the play quite well, it ends with a rhyming couplet, woe and Romeo. The Prince is saying, Look what has been done, the sun will not come out, as it is weeping for Romeo and Juliet, some of you will be forgiven, but others will be punished, this story was a moving one and though good came out of it in the end, it is still a story of despair.
